On Xu Yuanchong's Translation Of Tang Poems From The Perspective Of The Translator's Subjectivity

With the emerging of"culture turn"in translation study, translator turns into the subject in translation instead of"servant"to it. As the only subject in translation process, the visibility of translator's subjectivity has drawn much attention from researchers. Translator's psychology and decision-making process have been gradually recognized. This thesis is to attempt to make analyses on the concrete demonstration of translation's subjectivity by employing the method of contrast from the perspective of the translator's subjectivity. According to this thesis, prejudice and presupposition, translation skopos, cultural awareness, aesthetic beliefs and personal interest and ideas on translation are main factors involved in translator's subjectivity.The process of literary translation is a complex and dynamic dialogue. As the only subject in translation, translator first should understand the original poem fully as a reader, and then, should work out expressions in the target text as a creator. Professor Xu Yuanchong made remarkable contribution to Chinese poetry translation and has had far-reaching influence in the area. His subjectivity is all the more noticeable due to the fact that his translation is full of challenges. This paper makes a tentative study on Xu's subjectivity in translation, namely, his personal interest as a translator, translation motivation, his special cultural attitude, aesthetic attitude, his translation theory and his attitude towards translation revision respectively. By concluding Xu's revision on translation into demonstration of translator's subjectivity, the author illustrates his conscious pursuit of beauty, the style of neatness and concise, and the subjectivity to meet the expectations of readers.Based on"Horizon of Expectations"and"Fusion of Horizons", this paper also lists some limitation on Xu's theory and his practice in translation. Therefore, appropriate subjectivity is required in translation. Only under the correct aesthetic belief, translation motivation, cultural awareness and taking account of the fusion of horizon between the translator and the author as well as the target reader and endeavoring to maximize them can a translator make full use of his subjectivity properly and work out excellent translation.
