Through all the ages, translation circles both at home and abroad have their own understanding of style of literary works, among whom the dispute on translatability of style exists due to different understanding. It is no doubt that literature is the art of language and language is the first essential factor of literature. Thus the viewpoint of"language is the basis of style translation"is agreed upon by both groups which hold the point of translatability or untranslatability. Perceiving from the analysis of style made by British linguist Geoffrey N. Leech and Chinese translation theorist Liu Miqing, modern theory lays special emphasis on language analysis of the text. Great efforts are made to seek for definite style factors which are used to differentiate traditional intangible explanation on the style. Based on aforementioned reason, Liu Miqing treats style as a symbolic system, which is classified into Form Markers and Non-Formal Markers. This thesis intends to focus on how to analyze and make preparation for reproducing style of the original work before novel translation, which lays the essential foundation for grasping the Stylistic Markers of the original. Style of the original work thus could be reproduced through reflecting those markers in the translation. The whole thesis is divided into five parts. The first part is a general introduction. It introduces aim, scope, method and general structure of the thesis. The second part is literature review part. It first of all defines style; then retrospects on studies on style translation in the West and in China and dispute over translatability and untranslatability of the style; finally it gives the criteria of successful style translation. The third part focuses on the analytical process of style translation. It gives analysis separately to the receptor factor (including the translator , original readers and readers of the target version), the writing style of the original writer (taking British novelist Thackeray as an example). Then it puts forward Liu Miqing's Stylistic Markers and makes a general analysis on style of the original work. The fourth part is based on the theories of the first three parts. It takes Yang Bi's translation of Vanity Fair as an example. Through an analysis of translations of examples with different Stylistic Markers, it is found that the translator grasps these markers and embodies them in her translation, which contributes to the high evaluation as a model of reproducing style of the original work. The last part makes the conclusion. In order to reproduce style of the original work, analysis and preparation should be made before novel translation. The Stylistic Markers of the original should be grasped in the course of translation and reflected in the translation as many as possible to reproduce style of the original. Limitations of this thesis and the direction of later research are also presented.
