On Subtitle Translation Of Prison Break From Perspective Of Functional Equivalence

During the last few decades, more and more foreign films and TV series have been introduced into China and gained popularity. However, the study of audiovisual translation has not drawn enough attention. In order to fill this gap,this thesis ,very tentatively proposes to analyze subtitle translation under the guidance of Nida's functional equivalence theory . Nida's theory of functional equivalence provides a completely new criterion for the evaluation of translated works, which shifts from the focus of message to that of the response of the receptors. The closest natural equivalent translation is the translation that can evoke from its readers the same response as the source text does from its readers.Due to the limitation of time and space in subtitle translation, according to Nida's functional equivalence theory, the subtitler should convey the meaning as much as possible in these constraints and achieve the closest natural equivalence. In order to serve this purpose, the translation methods like addition and reduction should be flexibly used. This thesis will take the hot American TV series Prison Break as an example to analyze how Nida's functional equivalence theory guide the subtitle translationTo sum up, for the purpose of offering some help to the translators of subtitle translation, the author hopes that the ideas presented in this thesis can draw more and more attention of the people in translation field to the subtitle translation, especially to Nida's functional equivalence theory that can be used as a valid guidance and criterion for it.
