In the process of modern design takes form and develops, cultural exchange has a function to impetus. We use a method that the traditional culture fuses with the foreign culture to deal with the cultural exchange on the background of the globalization. It is very useful to the formation and innovation of modern design.First, this paper analyzes the relationship between the culture and design. The modern design is a material form of culture and is inseparable from the culture. Secondly, this paper takes some examples, such as the ancient Chinese ceramics design and furniture design, the Scandinavia design, the Japanese design and want to find that which kind of foreign culture affects their development and how to maintain national character in the process of they contact with other countries in the world. So they prove that no matter which era it is and which country it is, the cultural fusion is very important to the development and maturity of the modern design. In other words, the innovation of design is inseparable from the cultural fusion. Thirdly, this paper analyze the cultural exchange conditions at present and the conflicts that take place in current cultural exchange in China, the ecological crisis of culture that we must confront and the shortcoming that the modern design has in this background, and consider that the cultural fusion is a good way to create a modern cultural model and to give continuous innovation to modern design. At last, this paper puts forward some suggestions to combine the national culture with the foreign culture and combine traditional culture with modern design in our cultural exchange. It can give our some enlightens to find out a development path suited to the Chinese modern design.
