News Translators' Gatekeeping Model

As a bridge between different cultures in the information age, news translation is pretty significant for information flow, opinion exchange and understanding enhancement. This thesis sets news translation as the research subject, and mainly deals with the nature of news translation, the news translator's role in news translation and a feasible and efficient news translators' gatekeeping model.The author firstly analyzes the news and news English, which includes the definition of news, news values, and the text structure of news, functions of news and stylistic characteristics of news English. This serves as a foundation for the latter source text analysis. Then the author proves that news translation is in fact a gatekeeping process and the news translator is the gatekeeper in news translation by adopting both functionalist approaches and gatekeeping theory. In the end, the author proposes an efficient news translators' gatekeeping model, which includes identification of translation briefs, source-text analysis and categorization of translation problems and adoption of correspondent translation strategies.Based on former scholars' researching findings, the author manages to combine the theories both in translation field and communication field and adopts the qualitative methodology with case studies in order to successfully complete the current study. Moreover, the author shows a great number of hard news examples to support her point of view. As for the samples in this thesis, the source news texts are from world-famous foreign newspapers' websites, like New York Times, Washington Post, The Times, Financial Times, and all the target texts are selected from the famous and popular Chinese newspaper, Reference News.The research of the thesis proves that news translation is as a matter of fact a gatekeeping process and functionalism serves as a theoretical base for news translation, and the news translators' gatekeeping model is significant for news translation practice.
