| Nowadays, the globalization of media has become a key area of interest. But uptill now, little attention has been paid to the role of translation and the translatorwithin global news flow. For a variety of reasons, there has not been much researchon the process by which a translation is produced, and to the translator’s actualperformance (Miao Ju2002:3), even less on the process of translating global news.Therefore, it leaves much room for exploration.The present paper aims at probing into the actual process of translating globalnews from the gatekeeping perspective. The hypothesis is as follows:1) Translatoracts as the gatekeeper in global news translation.2) Global news translation processcan be staged.3) A comprehensive model can be proposed. Two researchmethodologies have been adopted to verify this hypothesis. The first is a conceptualanalysis which is to explore the feasibility of whether the gatekeeping theory can beapplied to the study of the global news translation. The second is an empirical studywhich is to investigate translation process of a practicing news translator working for“http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/hqgj/”1.The findings prove that global news translation is a gatekeeping process. Thenews translator, acting as the gatekeeper, is responsible for gatekeeping each stage ofthe global news translation so that he/she can produce a quality translation which canfulfill certain communicative purposes. Besides, normal textual operations shouldconsider various gatekeeping operations, such as addition, deletion or reorganization,as part of the overall translation process. Therefore, a new perspective is found toview the process in translating global news as well as the role of the news translatorand his/her performance. Besides, through the discussion, the importance of newstranslation becomes more salient in the overall global news communication. |
