Since we entered the 21st century,a new era of human history,the media have become all the more indispensable in providing people from all over the world the opportunities to expose themselves to different cultures and customs,and to keep abreast of the latest developments around the globe.As an effective channel of mass communication,newspapers are becoming more and more important in this information age since the state,communities and individuals all demand for reliable and prompt information.China has scored great achievements since the onset of its opening-up policy in the late 1970s.As a result,the rapid social and cultural developments have found their best expression in the language of the people and hence,in the language of the mass media.In newspapers,a large number of neologisms have emerged, covering a wide range of social life from politics,economics,military,science, technology to education,culture,entertainment,health and so on.As part of an important means for foreigners to know about and understand China,news translations,especially translated neologisms therein,brief the outside world on China's up-dates and play critical roles in the advancement of China's modernization as well as its cultural exchanges and communication with other countries.While most of the translations are grammatically correct,some may appear awkward and obscure in the target language and there are some translation problems that affect the communication effects.These include:inappropriate back translation,obscure cultural identification,Chinglish expressions,etc..It is thus necessary to probe into the proper strategies for news neologism translation.Domestication and foreignization have been one of the heated topics in the debates among translation theorists and practitionners.Scholars at home and abroad never stop contributing their views and opinions over the issue.However, few discussions have been effected from the perspective of the communication process.The author of the present study holds the view that translation process is in effect a particular kind of communication process.To coincide with the increasing researching interests in the interdisciplinary relationship between communication studies and translation studies,an attempt is made in this paper to analyze the application of domestication and foreignization in news neologism translation from the angle of communication process.In the present study,a few introductory remarks are made on the theoretical development in researches into foreignization and domestication both in the West and in China.The characteristics of news neologism translation are also discussed. Then through an analysis of some sample texts,the author probes into the application of foreignization and domestication to the communication process of translating news neologisms.With the investigation into the two strategies applied to news neologism translation,it is hoped that the present study will make some contributions to the practice of neologism translation and provide a new research angle on foreignization and domestication.
