| Being an important part of human life, culture records the human activities and collects thehuman history. It reflects the world view of a nation, learned by people and transmitted throughgenerations. With the development of economic globalization, cultural globalization has beengaining more and more attention. Meanwhile, translation acts as a cultural tie in the process ofcultural globalization.News touches upon every aspect of human life and reflects the dynamics and developmentof culture. To human beings, it not only has a close tie with their daily life, but also meets theirnatural intellectual curiosity. News translation passes the information to the whole world in itsunique way and reflects more cultural differences because of the intervention of media.Therefore, news translation has gained its due urgency and significance.News translation is a bridge over different cultures and plays a vital role in the process ofinternational communication. With the enhancement of its comprehensive national strength,China is asserting increasing influence over international affairs. Hence, there exists more andmore cross-cultural communication between China and other nations. Meanwhile, English actsas a global language used in various fields which makes C-E news translation more and moreurgent and significant. With the exploration of news translation, culture and cross-culturalcommunication, C-E news translation is defined as a cross-cultural activity in this thesis. And thecultural barriers in the news translation practice are elaborated clearly in the thesis. However, onthe author’s observations about C-E news translation, some translators have been payingovermuch attention on the fluency and naturalness of the translation verse while leaving theChinese culture neglected, failing to spread Chinese culture which is the ultimate aim of newstranslation. Moreover, it can lead to the loss of the Chinese cultural identity.Based on Lawrence Venuti’s theories on translation strategies, this thesis explores the C-Enews translation strategies and testifies the proposed translation techniques with lots of newsexamples. The author also attempts to indicate the dual responsibilities of news translator whoshould give a full play to his or her subjectivity.Concerning the translation strategies from the cross-cultural perspective, a dialectical theoryof domestication strategy and foreignization strategy is proposed in this thesis. For the purposeof an effective cross-cultural communication, domestication strategy is applied in the linguistic level while foreignization strategies in cultural level. The author hopes the research to be helpfulin the filed of news translation practice and be useful on the research of cross-culturalcommunication.The whole thesis is divided into seven parts. First, it gives an introduction where thebackground, significance and methodology of the whole thesis are introduced. Second, it gives abrief introduction of language, culture, news translation and their relationship. Third, it talksabout two translation strategies, foreignization and domestication. It gives a brief introductionabout definition, dispute and the author’s own view about the two strategies. Fourth, it discussesabout cross-cultural communication, proving that news translation is a cross-cultural activity.And then the author explores the role of news translating activity in cross-culturalcommunication, pointing out its importance in the course of cultural spread. Fifth, it explores thecultural elements reflected in news reports from a more general perspective of ideologicaldiscrepancies, translator’s subjectivity and culture-loaded words. Sixth, it probes into thetranslation strategies and resorts to some specific translation techniques to make it. To achievethe optimization of cross-cultural communication, both domestication strategy and foreignizationstrategy should be applied in the course of news translation. Finally, it sums up the whole thesis,and states the findings and shortages in the thesis. |
