The world is becoming smaller and smaller. People living in the different cultures are much closer to each other. Therefore, translation becomes the bridge of the intercultural communication. Through translation, we can learn of other nations and their cultures. At the same time our culture can be learned by foreigners.Language and culture are closely related to each other. One language corresponds with one culture. Without language, culture can neither have its function, nor be passed down from generation to generation. Language can not stay without culture, because it is only meaningful in corresponding culture. Therefore, culture study can not be done without language, and language study can not be done without culture. All intercultural study such as translation, culture comparison, foreign language teaching etc. should take culture difference into consideration, but not just study language difference through the psychology of the native culture. It is necessary to study language difference through culture difference if we want to grasp the internal connection between language and culture effectively. In the 1970s, with the culture trend of the translation study, the nature of translation as a means of intercultural communication drew more and more attention from the translation researchers. The argument between domestication and foreignization began to emerge. Domestication is to bring the writer to the reader, trying to bring the source language culture into the reader's scope of knowledge. Foreignization is to bring the reader to the writer, preserving the foreignness of the source language culture. Because of the great difference between the two cultures, the translator will face a difficult choice. And a translation text will have a tendency of the two strategies. It is said that the debate between domestication and foreignization is one of the focuses of translation studies. Reviewing the relevant discussion of both western and Chinese scholars, it can be found that whether to domesticate or foreignize in intercultural translation has always been an important topic for discussion and it will be the hot issue in the present field of translation study. The world is changing every day and the intercultural communication is becoming increasingly important. News, as an effective way of spreading information, is having huge influence on people's daily life. News translation, as a typical intercultural communication activity, gives the information to the readers quickly and effectively in its specific ways. The importance of it is obvious. It plays a vital role in the intercultural communication. The task of news translation is to spread the other countries'information to target readers so that they are offered a good opportunity to know the foreign information and enjoy the same experience. Through the quick and effective spread of newspaper, radio, television and internet, our life is greatly shocked in both social and cultural aspects. The same as other types of texts, when news is being translated, certain standards and rules have to be obeyed. So during the process of news translation, it is not so easy for the translators to choose between domestication and foreignization.Translation is an intercultural communication activity, so is the English news translation. It is not only the transmission between languages, but also the transmission between cultures. Thus, in order to realize the cultural transmission, it is more important for translators to have bicultural and intercultural awareness than to have bilinguistic knowledge. However, the choice of translation strategy is equally important. This thesis will discuss domestication and foreignization in news translation from the perspective of intercultural communication. First, such basic concepts as culture, translation and news are stated in the thesis. Their features and the relationship between each other are analyzed as well. Then the concepts of domestication and foreignization are reviewed as well as the debate between them in both Chinese and Western translation history. And then based on the theories of the intercultural communication and domestication and foreignization, some translation texts from English news are analyzed. The purpose of the study is to see whether to domesticate or to foreignize in the news translation from English into Chinese and the factors that determine the translators'choice of translation strategy. The analysis of particular examples is made from two aspects, dealing with the language difference and dealing with the cultural difference. From the analysis, it is found that when dealing with language difference, translators usually choose domestication as the translation strategy. While when dealing with cultural difference, whether the target readers are familiar with the cultural elements and the background information and how familiar will determine the translators'choice of translation strategy. Because of the author's low level and other limitations, the thesis is far from perfection. I hope that the study of this thesis can provide some valuable conclusions to the news translation.
