In this paper, the contents are authoritarianism and the relation between authoritarianism and economic modernization in Korea. Authoritarianism was a special governmental form coming into being in the new nations of Asia, Africa and South America under the particular history background. Korea's authoritarianism was a typical model of which in East Asia. Its birth and current were directly affected by the surroundings of East Asia and the world patterns. The development of modernization in Korean economy was greatly effected by the authoritarianism. In this paper, the author applies the method combines theories and historical facts into analysis to clarify the following problems.There are four parts in this thesis. Chapter One emphasizes to elaborate the related theories in the whole paper, which includes the concept of authoritarianism; The related theories of economic modernization; The relationship between authoritarianism and economic modernization and how to distinguish the modernization of authoritarianism. That is to say, special historical background gives birth to authoritarianism. Authoritarianism is different from country to country due to various political structures in different countries. Authoritarianism, as a superstructure, greatly motivates the economic development in Korea. However, this is not a panacea. The above-mentioned three parts are essential background and theoretic elements for analyzing the relationship between authoritarianism and economic modernization.Chapter Two set forth the domestic and international background and development of modernization in Korean economy. The domestic element is the establishment of Park Chun-Hee government, which is characterized with authoritarianism. This is extremely important to the development of modernization in Korean economy. Then, the international background is economic assistance from USA and Japan, which impulses the Korean economic development. It is the domestic and international background that the Korean economy acquires outstanding progress.Chapter Three is the essential part of this paper, which lay out the economic intervention of the Park Chun-Hee government. The functions of authoritarianism in Korean economy is explained here. The conclusion is that the kernel variable for the rocketing modernization of Korean economic development is the leading political system of authoritarianism.Chapter Four aims to the anticipation for China from authoritarianism and modernization in Korean economic development. The high-speed development of Korean economic plays a pervasive important role in re-structuring economic patterns for other developing countries in the the contemporary era. As a developing country in eastern Asia, China commits herself to economic development. The research of Korean economy helps us to anticipate a well-being surrounding for China.
