A text book is a foundation for educating people, which decides the teaching content and form and embodies the training objectives and educational mode. It is the core of English curriculum resources and the basis of developing the English teaching reform in depth. Therefore, it is urgent to solve the problems that have arisen in the development of the English text books used in secondary vocational education, such as, how to choose, evaluate, and make good use of the text books we use? How do we compile and revise the text books to reflect their practicality and the professionalization of the secondary vocational education so as to promote the development of teaching? There is very little specialized research on the English text books of secondary vocational education, and even fewer people who try to compile them from practical aspects to promote the students' English study, although so many studies about teaching materials currently exist both home and abroad. This field is still weak and needs more research to enrich it, and it is necessary to survey and analyze the use of English text books for secondary vocational education and then do thorough research, thereby exploring the suitable English text books for secondary vocational education. The series of "English (Basic Editions)" can be said to be the only relatively systematic English teaching materials used in the secondary vocational education in Jilin City, and it absolutely holds the leading position among all English text books for vocational education in Jilin City. The series is being adapted, so it is of great practical significance to evaluate it scientifically and comprehensively.This paper with the spirit of new curriculum reform is on the basis of some relevant study results of educational theory, linguistic theory, language learning theory, language teaching theory, and teaching material evaluation theory, and this study is conducted by the integrated means of research, questionnaire and interview. After analyzing the text and investigating the use of "English (Basic Editions)" , the existing problems in the use of the materials are identified, the causes are analyzed, and specific recommendations for its improvement are made. In addition, a set of practical unit templates are designed for creating a practice-oriented and content-based compiling method of English text books for secondary vocational schools. This paper is divided into five parts:Partâ… : Introduction. It is concerned with the background, content and significance of this study.Partâ…¡: Literature review. It deals with some relevant theories and studies of teaching materials and their assessment, including the definition, types, and functions of text books, compiling principles, analytical studies home and abroad, and some research on the English text books of secondary vocational school.Partâ…¢: Survey study on the practicality of the "English (Basic Editions)" in secondary vocational schools. Firstly this part focuses on guiding ideology, structural system, compiling and designing, content organization and arrangement, viewpoints of curriculum, language and language teaching and some other aspects of teaching materials by the means of research. Then it investigates the use of this material through a questionnaire given to 630 students and 40 teachers in six secondary vocational schools in Jilin City and interviews some teachers and students about what can not be asked clearly in the questionnaire and some major problems reflected by the questionnaire. According to the results of investigation and interview, the writer identifies the problems and analyzes the causes in the use of the materials.Partâ…£: Results and discussion. We draw the conclusion whether the English text books used in secondary vocational schools in Jilin City is practical, from the aspects of market demand, students characteristics, materials design, materials content, classroom teaching and the status of teachers, etc. In addition, some constructive suggestions on the improvement of the text books' practicality are made, from the guiding ideology of compiling, teaching content, developing system of teaching materials and other aspects of teaching materials; and a practical unit template is provided. At the same time, the writer suggests how teachers can use the materials appropriately and effectively in teaching.Partâ…¤: Conclusion. This part summarizes the main findings and points out the limitations of this study and the direction of further study in the future.
