The translation boom in the new century has brought up an urgent need for translation quality assessment. Traditional TQA approaches are mostly academic and comprehensive, thus lacking operability. This thesis aims to build a practical TQA model specific for English-Chinese EST translations. This thesis summarizes seven characteristics of EST text. They are use of formal and technical words, nominalization, long sentence, depersonalization, passive voice, present tense and cohesion. Based on these characteristics, Williams's argumentation-centered TQA model is adapted. The adaptation is to consider them as parameters to be assessed. Then a relevant rating grid as well as a practical quality standard is offered. The testing of the adapted TQA model proves that it is valid and the added parameters are relevant and practical. The adapted model examines not only the transfer of the deep messages but also the reflection of the characteristics of EST text in the target language.
