On Translation Of Patent Specification In Light Of Functionalist Translation Theory

Research in patent translation has long been overlooked. Though many researchers and patent translators have described lexical, grammatical and stylistic characteristics of patent document, they failed to provide systematic academic support to patent translation. To fill in this gap, this thesis tries to use functionalist translation theories to examine the patent translation.According to the Theory of Translational Action and Skopos Theory, translators have to give sufficient consideration to the functions of the translated texts and serve appropriate roles in the translation process. All these decide the appropriate translation strategies a translator should adopt.This thesis uses top-down approach to examine patent translation. Text function and translator's roles are studied first. Then features of idealistic translation are proposed. Detailed translation techniques are also provided to achieve these features. Finally, the thesis gives guidance for translator's macroscopic strategy. Through analyses, the author arrives at the following conclusions:1. To translate Claim(s), translator is a"mediator"between inventor and examiner. The translation should be of the right format, ambiguous and precise at the same time. Translators are recommended to use the strategy of literal translation.2. To translate Description of Invention, translators serve as"information transferor". The language should be accurate, clear and easily readable. It follows that the translators are recommended to use free translation strategy and put more emphasis on language characteristics and cultures of target readers.3. To translate Background Information, translators are"introducers". The language should be plain and objective. Translator is allowed to omit certain content in the original text, and enjoys more freedom in translation.
