This thesis builds up the cognitive process model of translation by improving the model by Bell and proves its feasibility through translation practice of commercial translation. Beginning with a general overview of current theories on translation model, a brief introduction is given to cognitive study on translation process. According to the translation process model by Bell, the cognitive process of translation has been divided into two sub-processes: analysis and synthesis. On basis of his translation mode, another sub-process called meta-cognition has been added which controls the other two sub-processes on a higher cognition level. To put this model into practice, commercial translation is chosen as examples to carry out case analysis. In order to show the cognitive process from simplicity to complexity, this thesis focuses one major type of commercial translation: product description translation. In conclusion, the cognitive translation process model is composed of three sub-processes: analysis, synthesis and meta-cognition sub-process.The research done in this thesis has following significances: firstly, it makes an improvement of existing translation model with specifying the sub-processes during translation; secondly, for commercial translation, with perspective of enterprise management, some constructive suggestions have been given in the hope of improving the quality and process of commercial translation. To sum up, it is hoped that this thesis will better reveal the hidden regularities of translation process and provide practical suggestions for wider range of translation practice studies.
