Thirty years of reform and opening-up as well as socialist modernization drive have brought China to a much higher status in the international community, which turns out to be a great historical success. People all over the world are increasingly eager to learn more about China, including her political policies, economic situations and future plans. In the mean time, China is willing to demonstrate herself to the outside world so as to be better understood in all aspects. The annual"Report on the Work of the Government"(hereinafter referred to as RWG) delivered to the People's Congress, reviewing the performance of the Chinese government during last year or the past five years and outlining the plans for the future development in the areas of future plans in politics, economy, education, culture and etc. certainly presents the most authoritative and important source of information about the current situation in China. Therefore, the translation plays an extremely important role in transmitting the information in RWG to the rest of the world. This thesis studies the translation of RWG 2008 from a functionalist perspective in four chapters besides introduction and conclusion. Introduction briefly generalizes the theme and purpose of this thesis. Chapter One is a detailed summery of some distinctive linguistic features of RWG; Chapter Two reviews the previous study of RWG translation and lists out the main factors influencing RWG translation; Chapter Three generally reviews the functionalist translation theories and its application in RWG translation; Chapter Four is a case study on English translation of RWG 2008 in light of functionalism and suggests certain translation strategies at lexical, syntactical and textual levels. In Conclusion,"faithfulness"is proposed as the basic principle of translating RWG for the sake of a functional equivalence. It is also stated that this thesis has its limitations, and certain other aspects in the study of RWG translation should be further explored.
