A Study Of The Chinese-English Translation Of Report On The Work Of The Government 2018 From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

To enhance the world's understanding of China and shape a positive image of it internationally,Chinese government is attaching increasing importance to the translation for international publicity,an essential part of which is the translation of Report on the Work of the Government.Thus,exploring its translation is of practical significance.Most previous scholars have conducted studies of the Chinese-English translation of Report on the Work of the Government from theories like equivalent theory.In recent years,some scholars have made studies from the perspective of Skopos Theory.Currently,however,there is a lack of systematic and comprehensive quantitative researches.Therefore,from the perspective of Skopos Theory,this thesis has conducted a study of the Chinese-English translation of Report on the Work of the Government 2018 by combining quantitative and qualitative methods.To begin with,this thesis managed to collect the distribution of translation strategies,methods and techniques applied to the Chinese-English translation of Report on the Work of the Government 2018 at the lexical,syntactical and textual levels by quantitative method.Then the causes of such distributions were analyzed by qualitative method from the perspective of Skopos Theory so as to figure out effective translation solutions.The data tell that the frequency of domestication is higher than that of foreignization at the three above levels,which is consistent with the guidance of Skopos Theory.Skopos Theory emphasizes the realization of the target text's skopos.As the English version of Report on the Work of the Government 2018 is informative text,information is supposed to be adequately transmitted to the target readers during the translation process.Meanwhile,expressions conforming to readers' culture and language habits are expected to be utilized.In this way,a positive image of China can be shaped internationally.This thesis enriches quantitative studies of the Chinese-English translation of Report on the Work of the Government 2018 from the perspective of Skopos Theory.Besides,it also provides reference for the translation of Report on the Work of the Government at the lexical,syntactical and textual levels.Moreover,this thesis complies with the development needs of translation for international communication and offers some enlightenment to the translation of political texts concerning international publicity.
