Method, purpose and scope of knowing activity change as the time changes. As uncertainty being one of contemporary social characteristics, re-analysis of the epistemology structure is very important for us to looking for new ways to recognize the world and ourselves. From the perspective of linguistic signs, this paper used a method of dialectical materialism and historical materialism to rethinking the epistemological system structure, and discussed its social significance. After having defined the linguistic sign, and a feasibility analysis, this paper completed a study on the function of linguistic signs in knowing activity with an epistemology structural framework. First, from the subject system structure, the paper analyzed linguistic signs'functions in all levels of subject. Meanwhile, inter-subjectivity and virtual subject was particularly concerned. Second, from the object system structure, the paper analyzed linguistic signs'functions which reflected in the object's characteristics. At the same time, the power of language signs and virtual beings was particularly concerned. Third, from the intermediary system structure, the paper analyzed linguistic signs'conversion from the role of instrument to the role of media. In the meanwhile, living world and virtual world, in which virtual subject interaction with the virtual object was particularly concerned. In this paper, the functional analysis didn't focus on the linguistic sign itself, but the real world behind linguistic signs. Knowing activity reveals existence, human nature, and value of people with linguistic signs, which in fact is a practice. The practice as a inherent characteristic of the Marxism epistemology, is required to be explored at present. Finally, to regard the world we live in as a realistic process of constantly generating was the paper's ultimate goal.
