The State Of The Art And Prospects Of China Children's Film

A children's film is a film aimed specifically for teenagers and children as its audience. During a child's growth, the Children's Film plays an important role in enhancing his/her aesthetic appreciation, improving his/her social cognition as well as relieving his/her moral pressure. However, China Children's Film has been in a slump because of the cognition limitations and the shortage of systematic research during the practice of the creation. This thesis presents the systematical study on the development history of China Children's Film. Furthermore, based on the comparing study between Chinese and foreign children's film, the thesis discusses the current status, problems and improvement measures in China Children's Film.The factors which result in the difficult situations of China Children's film are as following: (1) the definition of the Children's Film is not clear, and the original intention for separating children's film from other film types is ignored. A uniform recognition of the principal audience does not exist for the Children's Film, which results in confusion of Movie Classification; (2) the content of China Children's Film is over-simple and shallow, and the current standards are limited to a superficial form. The film creators always ignore the children's psychological characteristics, and make a plain and dull expression of the social ideology in the Children's Film; (3) the Children's film has the problem of monotone type. Almost all the topics are related to either the campus life or the war story, which is far from meeting the children's aesthetic needs; (4) the vicious circle in the movie market, created by the negative factors such as the unattractive advertisement, the pathetic consciousness on derivative products, and the problems of budget shortage, aggravates the recession of China Children's Film; (5) the children's film shows a tendency of"adult-like". Even an adult's perspective is adopted to express self-emotion instead of a Child's point of view.To ensure the development and prosperity of China Children's Film, it is necessary to effectively take the following measures: (1) identify that the main scope of audience is children although somewhat giving consideration to adult audience; (2) according to the children's aesthetic characteristics, actively widen the scope of the themes of the Children Film; (3) emphasize the content of science and technology, enhance the expression ability of the Children's Film, cut the film's budget, and create innovative modes for the movie show; (4) design a new curriculum of Appreciation of Movie Arts in elementary/middle schools for the greater aesthetic appreciation education and set up a profession of the Children Film in colleges to foster the film creation personnel; (5) through the Film Criticism, expand the impact and promote the Children's Film creation and research; (6) set up and complete the Film Censorship and Classification System; (7) fulfill the commercial operation of the children's film, expand the media selection and enhance the production of Children's Film.The systematic research presented in this thesis makes original contributions to the state of the art in the domestic Children's Film, which not only provides an analysis of the existing problems surrounding children's films, but also proposes realistic solution through prospective study. Additionally, the filmography of China Children's Films produced from 1922 to 2006 is compiled in this thesis.
