On News Translation Process In The Context Of International Communication

Practice of news translation dates back to 170 years ago in China,however, studies of news translation are far falling behind.It was not until the middle of 1980's that papers on news translation were found in major academic journals.Fortunately, more and more scholars and senior practitioners in translation have drawn attention to studies on this topic and many productive works have been yielded,which clearly is conducive to development of news translation.By reviewing what they have presented us,it is easily figured out that studies of news translation still run short of systematic approaches and integrated theoretic framework which is understandable concerning its short span of history.And it seems to be a tendency that researchers have paid more attention to translating technique in micro-level than to strategies in macro-level.Obviously,the situation should be reversed if the research on this field moves forward.Given the fact,often ignored by researchers indeed,that news translation is not only a matter of translation but also a matter of international communication(IC),the author chooses to examine news translation in the perspective of IC and attempts to outline a model of news translation process with the dual theoretic support,the theory of IC in macro-level and that of translating process in micro-level.Starting with introduction to IC process,the author firstly locates what role news translation plays in IC and how the other elements of IC influence news translation.Then moving to news translating process which means what happens in translating from one language to another,the author discuss on its specific,steps and every influencing element in the process in the theoretic framework of translating process theories proposed by some eminent researchers.Furthermore,with the two discussions put together,the complete process model of news translation is mapped out.Apart from some traditional studies of translation process which often centers on cognitive or psychological activity of translators,this model merely focuses on what steps should be adopted,what elements should be considered and what strategy should be taken in news translation.It is more like a work to sum up a strategy the translator should take in journalistic.translation. To illustrate it,the final section of the dissertation is presented with actual application of the process model and demonstration of the processing.To study the process of news translation in the context of international communication contributes to outlining a clear news translation map which helps translators to attach great importance to macro-strategy,along with specific skills in news translation.The author makes endeavor to layout a model of news translation process in the hoping of a small contribution to improvement of quality of news translation.Moreover,it is probably beneficial to teaching in news translation by shifting its focus from mere translating skills to overall strategy with technique.
