A Report On English News Translation

Along with constant development of Africa and vigorous promotion of “The Belt and Road Initiative”,interactions between China and Africa have become more frequent.More and more Chinese are increasingly interested in news from Africa.However,on account of the specific characteristics of Africa,relevant scholars at home and abroad have not yet made adequate research on translation of news from Africa.Obviously,this research is quite necessary.This thesis is a report on news translation.First,it briefly states the background of the selected topic,relevant researches,research methods and its structure.Next,it describes the requirements for and the process of translating a series of Kenyan election news items.Then,by analyzing a large number of typical examples,the thesis proves some major techniques for translation of titles,words,sentences and sections of news items,as well as methods for trans-editing news.Also,the author analyzes the problems encountered in the translation of proper nouns,acronyms,time words,etc.as well as proper solutions to them.Moreover,the author verifies four techniques for translation of news headlines or titles: adding information,highlighting the theme,shortening long sentences and flexibly using numbers.In addition,the translation of news texts is divided into two parts: fully translating and trans-editing news items.News editing is divided into in-section editing,in-text editing and inter-text editing.The creative points of this thesis include the following: 1)relevant theory of translation is used to guide the translation of local news in Africa;2)the four techniques for translation of news headlines or titles are summarized by the author through much practice and careful observation and proved to be practical;3)analysis of the examples is reasonable and credible.This report aims to provide enlightenment and reference for news translators,especially for translators of African news.
