A Report On The Translation Of English News

Environment is closely related to everyone.It is a translator's important task to translate English news on the dynamic state of world environment to Chinese readers in a timely and accurate way.However,researches on translation of environmental news are quite limited.Guided by Liu Zhongde's triple principle of “faithfulness,expressiveness and closeness”,the writer of this thesis has translated 12 pieces of environmental news and made research on the versions.Clearly,this report possesses much reference value.Firstly,the writer briefly introduces related background,reviews relevant literature,and mentions the significance and the major research methods of this thesis.Next,the author proves and illustrates such general features as timeliness,general connectivity,scientificity and ideology of the news texts.Then,it verifies and exemplifies their linguistic characteristics,including lexical,sentential,and textual features.The lexical features include frequent use of abbreviations,compounds and slangs and professional terms.Sentential features comprise simple structures,rich meaning of words and expressions,frequent use of the passive voice and direct quotations.Then,the thesis proves such major strategies as literal translation and liberal translation.Meanwhile,it also illustrates such translation techniques as conversion of parts of speech,addition of proper words,use of four-character phrases,translation of sentences according to the original order,translation of sentences in the inverted order,division,combination,use of integrated techniques,etc.The report highlights that it is essential for a translator of texts of environmental news to properly deal with writers' viewpoints,to translate specialized knowledge and technical terms in a proper way,and to flexibly use strategies and techniques of translation.All these make it possible for the translation to be faithful to the original text,to be smooth in language and to be close to the original style.This report aims at enlightening translators of environmental news and improving their translation quality.
