This dissertation conducts a comprehensive literary and cultural analysis on HaJin's A Free Life from the perspective of post-colonialism,meanwhile mentioning the tortuous development of Chinese-American literature--from being neglected to being in the light lime,from being marginalized to emerging into the mainstream.In light of post-colonialism theory,this dissertation takes a study on the characters and cultural context based on the text analysis.It examines the metaphysical examination about existence and freedom of a free individual;it explores the amalgamation and development of different cultures;it also tries to draw an outline of a new literary paradigm which can syncretize Chinese and western cultures.This dissertation can be divided into six parts.The introductory chapter makes a literature review of the subject.It also expounds the framework and methodology of the dissertation.In light of the theory of "the Others",the second chapter probes into the specific manifestations of "the others" in cross-culture writing;It also explores the dilemma of the "dual identity of the Others" in such writing.The third chapter studies the deviants in cultural identification.It concentrates on the possibility and initiative on Chinese-American writers' search for further development based on the studies on aboard study,immigration and migration.The forth chapter expounds the transition of cultural identity.This chapter discusses the ideal and the efforts by the Chinese-American who try to build a Third Space,based on a process of pursuing the identity in the context of "the Others".The fifth chapter mainly focuses on Hajin's inevitable limitation of "Orientalism" by analyzing his ideal and efforts of building the Third Space by analyzing the idea and the efforts of building the Third Space.And the last chapter,chapter six,is the conclusion of this dissertation.It summarizes the inspiration by studying the problem about "the Others" and "culture identity" from three aspects:the reflection on ethnicity and "Orientalism" and the outline of a new literary paradigm which can syncretize Chinese and western cultures.
