Through the elaboration and integration of the concept of self-esteem and the influential factors, both at home and abroad, the study makes a theoretical exploration and discussion about the concept and research of the coping styles; Using Self-Esteem Scale SES (Rosenberg, 1965) and the "Coping Style Questionnaire"edited by Xiao Jihua, a test was made among 506 college students at 2 universities in Changchun. Descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, t tests, correlation analysis and other research methods were used to describe the distribution of college students'self-esteem level, focusing on the relationship between self-esteem level of university students and the coping styles. The relationship can be said to be a complex cause and effect relationship of mutual promotion. People of high self-esteem level would show positive self-acceptance and recognition, and behave themselves in an active way; frequent adoption of a positive coping style can also enhance the level of individual self-esteem; through cognitive efforts and actions, it will be improve college students'talent and promote problem-solving. This study can provide empirical information for self-esteem, coping styles and psychological health education research.The discovery of the research and study:(1) self-esteem and disciplines showed no significant gender, The differences of grade exist in self-esteem level , but it is not an upward trend, self-esteem of grade is lower than the grade one and grade three. As for the obvious decline in the grade two it may be affected by external factors. Fresh-man entering a new learning environment, in the process of adjustment and adaptation. They relatively emphasis on the views of others,their social expectations is high, and the junior students are generally under adults'support and concer, self-esteem levels increase in this situation. Between the changes,the senior students are suffering self-experience at a relatively low self-esteen in this process of know themselves again.(2) in face of stress events, there is sex differences in the choice of "help" and "fantasy" coping styles; compared with male students, female students are more inclined to adopt the "help" and "illusion" coping styles, and students of art are more inclined to select the "help" coping style than those of science. In dealing with stress events, the arts students pay more attentions to the social characteristics, and tend to choose to call for help. Science students think that the general problems that can be solved on their own ability in a very good solution, so the seldom call help for others.(3) College students of high self-esteem level tend to choose an active coping style, while those of low self-esteem level tend to choose "self-blame" and "fantasy" and other negative coping styles.
