The Functional Mechanism Of Parenting Style On Self-esteem And Coping Style Of Only-child

This study aims to investigating the self-esteem and coping styles of the children from the only-child family in the middle school,and exploring the functional mechanism of parenting style on self-esteem and copying style.Several scales were used,including Short Egna Minnen av Barndoms Uppfostran(Chinese version),Self-esteem Scale,Middle School Students' Coping Style Scale and a questionnaire of demographic characteristics.The structured scales were distributed in 5 Middle School in Changsha.1064 valid questionnaires were collected,including 541 only children and 523 non-only children.The main tool to analyze the data is SPSS software.Several statistical analysis methods are included,such as chi-square test,analysis of variance,correlation analysis and regression analysis.Meanwhile,this present study also conducted the Amos software to establish the structural equation model of the effect of parenting style on self-esteem and coping style.The mesomeric effect of self-esteem on the model was examined by utilizing the Spssmacro script.The main results are as follows: 1)the parents' education levels of the only children are significantly higher than the non-only children and although the degree of using positive parenting styles of the only-child parents is higher,there are no significant difference of using negative parenting styles between them;2)only children were easier than non-only children to can feel love and warmth from parents,and their self-esteem are stronger;Coping with the problem,only children are more likely to ask for help or fantasy,rather than only children are more easily retreat or patience;3)different types of parenting way significant impact on the formation of the self-esteem of one-child,selection of coping styles,and self-esteem has a mediation effect in the mechanism which parenting styles affects the coping styles of only children;4)the negative parenting styles affect the one-child self-esteem,coping styles more than the positive ones,and the self-esteem which was affected the negative parenting styles have a great mediation effect on the coping styles,so the damage of the negative parenting styles on the one-child mental health is very high.The present study demonstrated that the parents should avoid to taking the negative parenting styles,such as excessive protection and refusal,especially the parents of the only-child family.
