This study examines the roles of occurrence and component number of Chinese characters on language learners' character learning. In this research, the subjects were asked to finish a Chinese character testing paper which were desinged to make judgements whether occurrence and component number plays a considerable role on learners' character learning. The results shown that:1) Occurrence of character plays a considerate role on learners' character learning. But the effect of numbers of component on subjects' performance is not significant.2) High-occurrence characters were learned better than the low-occurrence ones.We assumed that the occurrence effect may tend to decrease when it reaches a certain standard.Based on the findings of this study,a proposal on the occurrence in the textbooks is put forward at the end of the thesis. This study gave us suggestions that occurrence is an important factor during the acquisition of Chinese as a second language, the effect of component number was not yet to be found. This is a co-relational study which only reveals correlations between variables, therefore, further research is needed in the future.
