Modern Chinese Character Component Standard & A Survey On The Characteristics Of The Character Components In Chinese Character Grading Teaching Program For HSK

Components are the most practical structure units of Chinese characters and the basis to produce characters. To establish scientific, systematic, consistent component and parsing systems is the fundamental work for form processing and standardization of modern Chinese characters. However, the non-standardization phenomenon in component disassembly has been increasing in some fields year by year, and that has seriously interfered and obstructed the use and teaching of modern Chinese characters. In consideration of this, State Language Work Committee has successively formulated two component standards: Chinese Character Component Name Standard of GB13000.1 Character Set for Information Processing (issued in 12, 1997) and Modern Chinese Common Character Component Standard Of Elementary Teaching(will be issued soon) .The paper will explain and contrast the backgrounds of formulation, the principles, the scopes of application and the relationship between the two standards to makereaders understand them better. Furthermore, since it is an effective method to utilize component system in teaching foreign students Chinese characters, the paper has investigated the component properties of the 800 A-class characters in HSK Vocabulary & Chinese Character Grading Syllabus. The data resulting from that investigation can be taken as references in drawing up Chinese characters teaching program for foreign students and compiling textbooks.
