| Xu Yuanchong is an outstanding representative of contemporary Chinese translators. He not only translated a large amount of classical Chinese poetry, but also put forward his own translation theory - "Art of beautifulization and creation of the best as in rivalry".Therefore he made great contributions to spreading Chinese culture and promoting the status of Chinese literature in the world. His successful experience is worth learning and research, and many scholars at home and abroad have written books or articles from every angle in every aspect to make comments on his theory and practice. However, through investigation the author found that there has been not yet an article which makes a research from a cultural perspective. In view of this, the author attempts to approach this aspect to make a study of cultural transmission in Xu Yuanchong's translation of classical Chinese poetry. In the age of globalization,it will be very significant for the cultural exchanges between different peoples to probe into this field. The author selects Skopos theory to explore the strategy of cultural transmission adopted by Xu Yuanchong in his English translation of classical Chinese poetry.Skopos theory,as the core theory of the German Functional Translation School, takes the purpose of translation as the top rule, that is,the translation strategies that a translator chooses should be determined by the purpose of translation. Therefore,Skopos theory provides a new perspective for translation criticism and the theory foundation for the present thesis. In addition to Introduction and Conclusion, there are three chapters in this thesis. In the introduction, after giving a general survey of the present research about Xu Yuanchong's theory and practice, the author makes a study of Xu Yuanchong's theory and practice from the perspective of cultural transmission of classical Chinese poetry. Then the thesis makes a brief analysis of the intimate relationship among language, culture and translation. Finally, the thesis gives a brief introduction of Skopos theory which provides a theoretical support for this study.Chapter One studies Xu Yuanchong's translation theory-"Art of beautifulization and creation of the best as in rivalry". Chapter Two discusses Xu Yuanchong's translation purpose and strategy from the macro level.First, the thesis introduces Skopos theory. Then it analyzes Xu Yuanchong's purpose of translating classical Chinese poetry as well as the background of his translation and his intended readers:on the one hand,he wants to introduce and spread Chinese culture to the West,on the other hand,he wants to make the reader comprehend, appreciate and admire, which means the translator should not only be loyal to the original author, but also have to take the acceptability of the target readers into account. So he should adopt both of foreinization and domestication. However, since his ultimate aim is to disseminate culture,he should take foreinization as the main translation strategy.Chapter Three makes an analysis of translation methods Xu Yuanchong adopts in his translation practice from the micro level. In order to achieve his purpose of better and more effective transmission of Chinese culture to the West,Xu discards blind faithful translation, flexibly adopts different degrees of both literal translation and free translation according to the text, creatively changes surface forms of the original and makes full use of good expressions of the target language to make the Western readers comprehend, appreciate and admire. Therefore,he successfully fulfills his purpose of effective transmission of Chinese culture to the West. Finally, combined with Xu Yuanchong's translation purpose, the thesis sums up Xu Yuanchong's successful experience of the English translation of classical Chinese poetry, that is,in order to effectively convey the essence of Chinese culture to the Western readers,it is essential to make an optimum balance between the conveyance of culture information and the target reader's acceptability. |
