Classical Chinese poetry shows its charm by using images, which is its one of main features. To achieve literary effects, poets usually adopt these vivid images containing deeply meaningful implications. How to correctly and appropriately convey images that are loaded with cultural messages has been a key and difficulty in translation of classical Chinese poetry.Whether in China or other countries, many scholars have some opinions and conclusions about studying images. However, there is few scholars work hard on image with splendid culture in classical Chinese poetry.Until 1999,Xie Tianzhen,a brilliant Chinese translator, firstly came up a new term—“cultural image”in his book Medio-translatology.He took an example of“??”(Yang Zhou, now in Nang Jing Province)from the poem“???????”(“It was just March of the lovely spring full of flower.”),which soon stirred circle of translation.Through reading academic results from predecessors, the author of the paper presents three new findings.First, most of translators do not clearly recognize the differences between common image and cultural image during the process of translating classical Chinese poetry. So their versions don't express the cultural implications of some image.Second, current studies only focus on representing forms and translation methods of cultural image.Third, the theory value of cultural image is not made further analysis. As a gem lying in classical Chinese poetry, cultural image depends on a object to convey profound meaning to evoke sympathetic response in readers'minds, which will help to achieve higher literary effects. So translators should attach importance to cultural image, thoroughly consider its value, regard it as a special theory and guide the translation practice to realize the aim of introducing Chinese culture into outside world. So on the basis of these academic results, this paper will discuss the culture, image, cultural image and common image by analyzing studies on image.Besides,English versions of Chang Hen Ge by famous Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi will be adopted. This paper proves that Skopos Theory by Germany translator Hans Vermeer and eleven translation strategies by Spanish translator Aixela can be useful in translation of cultural images in Chinese classical poetry and achieve the aim of appropriately transmitting Chinese poem culture. And the paper hopes to effectively guide the translation of cultural images in classical Chinese poetry and improve the overall quality of classical poetry's English versions under the guidance of Skopos Theory and eleven translation strategies.
