On Cultural Transmission In Wang Rongpei's Translation Of The Handan Dream

Traditional translation studies tend to focus on linguistics or comparative study of many versions,and at the same time it neglects the study of one works of a translator.Since the "cultural turn" in 1970s,translator's marginalized position has been raised to the centre as a culture disseminator.So,the author of this thesis selects the classic Chinese works The Handan Dream and its first English version as the research data to explore how Wang Rongpei deals with cultural elements in the process of translating classic Chinese literary works.In the research process,the guiding theory is the culture-oriented German functional translation theory.The representative persons of this school are Reiss,Hans Vermeer and Nord,etc.They consider translation as communicative action and they think the focus of translation study is cultural translation instead of linguistic transformation.The purpose of the target text(skopos) is the highest rule of translation.The translation purpose of Wang Rongpei is to show the world the essence of the authentic traditional Chinese culture.That is why he chooses local opera—The Handan Dream as his translation object.He has followed his own translation principles in his translation practice and invariably adhered to his supreme goal to be "vivid in description and faithful in meaning".The author of the thesis analyses the translation strategies of Wang Rongpei for cultural factors from three aspects of culture-loads words,allusions and language culture.Through analyzing the typing sentences in the source text and in the target text,various translating techniques are summarized so that it would give some enlightenment and guidance on the translation theory and practice.
