The Construction Of Public Field Of Chinese Contemporary Arts

Public field is a concept in politics and sociology.Different people see it in different lights.But the definition given by Habermas has been widely accepted in the academic circle.The key meaning of his concept of"public field"is the public intercourse and public opinion that are independent from the political construction and its criticism on the political power and it functions as the basis for the legality of politica.The thesis defines"public field"to the category of that of art and discusses the construction of the public field of arts in China since 1985;It demonstrates how the public field of arts are competing with the official arts and its system under the state control and strives to comb its relations with the official arts and its system.This thesis falls into three parts:In the preface,this thesis firstly gives the definition of public field and states the status quo of the relevant research.Then according to this status quo and combining with the specific context of the Chinese arts,it constructs the researching viewpoint for this thesis.In chapter one,the author combs the concepts of"public field".The first concept was put forward by Hannaah Arendt,but it is Habermas who made it widely accepted in the academic circle and become a general definition.His theory of"public field"influences the following researchers like Charles Taylor and Thomas Yanosky and the like."public field"to Habermas,is the field of the bourgeoisie.This thesis adopts its commonest meaning,namely, public field is the public intercourse and public opinions that are independent from the political construction;it is out of the control of the state power,a field that is opposite to the private and family activities.Habermas classifies the public field into that of literature and that of politics,and the former then includes that of arts.This thesis singles out the public field of arts as the object for discussion,and talks about the questions in the construction of the contemporary Chinese public field of arts with the combination of the contemporary Chinese arts.Chapter two gives the analysis of the characteristics of the public field of arts and roles played by the art museuns and galleries as the constituting parts of this field in the process of construction of the public field of arts.The author,combining the specific conditions of China,combs the formation of the Chinese public field and analyses the particularity of this field in the specific Chinese context.In chapter three,the author of this thesis combs the constructing orbit of the public field of Chinese arts,combing the development and change of the contemporary Chinese arts:the author states how it formed into shape and how it formed the"quasi-public field of arts"characterized by maikets in the 1990s,and how it gradually grew up in the multi-lateral relations between the western capitals and domestic markets;the author also states the process from its germination to its growing,and its subtle change of nature in the competition between the Chinese official art museums and the system of the public field of arts as follows:in 1985,although the association of fine arts ended with a gun shot,it struck the first shock wave to the official art museum;Up to the 1990s,the art villages were born propelled by the overwhelming tide of the market economy which to some extent made the official art museum adopt the new system;then in this new century,the appearance of the art zones renders the authority not only into adopting the expressing form of the public field of arts but also shifting the operation of the official art museum,namely,it begins to plan and display by following their operating modes.The concluding part covers that the public field of arts widens its unique sphere and particular landscapes in the competition with the official art and its system.It plays an unreplaceable role in the development of the contemporary arts.To construct an equal and opening-up public field of arts will make this"sphere"of arts full of energy and develop prosperously.
