Spectacle movies, which emerged with the development of digital technique, are becoming a vogue in cultural market, due to their high investment, big-budget productions, and tremendous visual impact. This phenomenon increasingly catches movie theoreticians eye.Today, the study of spectacle movies in China is still at the stage of textual appreciation rather than further systemic construction. There are disputes on the change of style of movies among theoreticians. Some believes that it is harmful to the narrativity of movie and the depth of thinking. However others insist that the relation between spectacle and narrativity is simultaneous and coexistent rather than paradoxical.There are many shoddy as well as distinguished spectacle movies. The thesis seeks to elucidate the reasons for the phenomenon.The thesis consists of three parts. In the first chapter we explain the origin, development and contents of the spectacle text. We generally consider the development of movie spiraling course, including the first stage: Georges Melies's science-magic topic movies which were produced by stunts and effects of that time; the second stage: the inclination to realism in the middle of 20th century; and the third stage: the change course of spectacle movies in the late 20th century, in which we relate the spectacle text to movie scenes with intense sensory stimulus and emotional impacts based on computer digital technology. And then, according to the theory proposed by Professor Zhou Xian, Nanjing University, the contents of spectacle text are classified.In the second chapter, through relevant instances and technical analysis we discuss the aesthetic means, functions and significance of spectacle text. Some film directors who seek instant success and quick profits make extreme use of the computer digital technology which provides film directors with unprecedented expressions and effects of art. And then according to these characteristics of spectacle text, we believe that it extends the aesthetic experience of human.In the last chapter, we discuss the characteristics of up-to-date culture represented by spectacle movies. Although the culture is criticized by scholars, it is something useful because it originates and sublates from modernism culture including advanced elements. However it is impossible to completely reverse the development course of culture. What we need is to learn from experience and lessons. Finally we design measures to solve the problems.
