| Exercise plays a very important role in teaching Chinese as a foreign language, then the study of teaching materials is a valuable research topic. We found a lot of scholars have already paid emphasize on the exercise research, but the depth and breadth of research is not enough, especially the exercises of Chinese characters' teaching materials for foreigners. So now, the study of the exercises of Chinese characters' teaching materials for foreigners is still a new area in the field of Teaching Chinese as a foreign language.This paper selects six typical Chinese characters' teaching materials for foreigners, and we select some exercises as the object of study, we do the research from the following aspects:Firstly, drawing a conclusion of previous researches from four aspects (principles of designing exercises,exercise of different classes,specific forms of exercises,conclusions of materials evaluation and comparison). Then giving a expatiation on the significance of this study.Secondly, the author explaining the terminology and the standards appeared in this study.Thirdly, we try to set up a multi-dimensional analytical framework. The author make further analysis based on four main elements of the exercise design (including the exercises intensity, density, style and layout) .To sum up the characteristics of writing materials.Fourthly, On the basis of the above study, we use three learning theory to analyze the characteristic of the six Chinese characters' teaching materials for foreigners. We can select some advantages as the guiding ideology in the process of writing exercise for the materials. At the same time, we should try our best to avoid the disadvantages, to make the design more rational and more scientific, more practical, more suitable to the student to study Chinese characters. In this part, we focus on the analysis of their advantages and disadvantages.At last, according to these theories, we make some proposals about the design of the materials.
