The object of this research is to investigate the types of grammar exercises in the Chinese teaching materials specifically for American students. Firstly, four different kinds of integrated teaching materials for Elementary and Intermediate Chinese learners were selected, among which two were compiled by American researchers and published in the United States and the other two were compiled by Chinese researchers and published in China. Then the grammar exercise types, including the common types, unique types and some special types in each teaching material would be classified. Based on the studies about the specific components of English-speaking students' Chinese grammar competence and the relative theories in the fields of the second language pedagogy and acquisition studies, three significant aspects of grammar exercise types, namely, their specific goals, the grammar points which they are suitable to be applied into and the design principles would be further studied. After that, this research will conclude the connections between each component of Chinese grammar competence and the goals of grammar exercise types. Through these studies, it was found that the goals of grammar exercises types are featured with four distinctions including the straightforward goals, the mulriple goals, the main and subordinate goals, and some incidental goals. In order to conduct a more detailed observation, this research chooses a commonlanguage pattern "lian......dou/ye......" to analyze the different grammar exercisetypes and their own effects based on the former study results, starting with probing into the specific components of American students' grammar competence ofunderstanding and using pattern "lian......dou/ye......". It was found that some typessuccessfully achieved their goals, some types did not achieve well and some totally failed achieving, consequently some aspects of the grammar competence which are not effectively trained or lack of practice will be summarized. At last this research will design some other suitable grammar exercises types and arrange them in a good order.
