On Consecutive Interpretation And Its Strategies From The Communicative Perspective

Interpretation is an important way to enhance the interpersonal communication among human beings, which could be applied to a wide range of occasions from international political and financial negotiation to friendly exchanges and visits between nations, realizing effective communication between different parties. The interpreters with strong language ability and translation techniques will serve as the bridge between the parties concerned and overcome their differences in language and culture.This thesis takes consecutive interpretation as an inevitable medium in the process of effective communication, and aims to study it from the perspective of communication. In the past, various studies put emphasis on combining communication and interpretation from the methodological point of view, this thesis focuses on the application of communication strategies and tactics to interpretation performance with real life examples.First, communication models are integrated into the process of consecutive interpretation so as to prove the similarity and connection between the two. Meanwhile, the study and analysis of real life consecutive interpretation cases will prove the feasibility and practicability of this thesis and support the significance of furthering this study. The author of this thesis chunks the interpretation process into three major steps of interpretation, namely, message receiving, message processing and message conveying. By citing and analyzing examples from different circumstances, such as press conference, business negotiation, conference speech, etc, and by borrowing communication theories, strategies and tactics, including five strategies for message processing, the thesis applied the three strategies for message receiving and five strategies for message conveying, to the battlefield of consecutive interpreters. This study concludes with the presentation of several ethic codes for interpreters to refer to.There are more theories and tactics in other subjects and fields suitable, waiting to be introduced into the study of interpretation. We need to borrow mature strategies and tactics from other relevant studies to enhance the rapid advance of interpretation research, so as to make in line with the time to meet the demands of the society.
