English for science and technology (hereinafter referred to as EST) as a functional type of writing style has evolved features of its own style, vocabulary and linguistic rules on the basis of General English. Characterized by an objective, solemn and precise style, nominalization is regarded as one of the most prominent features in EST and is employed in a great number in EST. Misunderstanding may seriously undermine the whole informative function of EST. Therefore how to stress a complete representation of the facts or idea expressed by nominalization and render proper words into Chinese becomes a critical link in the EST translation. From the perspective of grammatical metaphor, the thesis aims to explore the phenomenon of nominalization in EST and its translation into Chinese on the basis of systemic-functional grammar. Beginning with the theoretical foundations of nominalization and related studies, the paper probes into the classification and characteristics of nominalization in light of grammatical metaphor. Next, it turns to the functions of nominalization in the text of EST in three aspects: ideational, interpersonal and textual. And then, it goes to the specific techniques suitable for the translation based on a plenty of examples. According to the different linguistic features of Chinese and English and different structures of nominal group, nominalizations can be realized as nouns, verbs and adjectives on the same rank or as clauses to a higher rank in Chinese.Although this paper cannot exhaust the phenomenon of nominalization in EST, the research is to enhance the comprehension of nominalization of EST readers and to improve the translation of nominalization in EST, which ultimately lays a solid foundation for the application and translation of EST.
