Foreign language, as a means of communication, is playing a more and more important role in the frequent international communication. Therefore, having a good command of a foreign language is the primary task for foreign language learners. However, the author finds that it is still unachievable for college students to communicate in a foreign language appropriately even if they have studied the language for many years. And the communication always ends in failure. Nowadays, many linguist, educators and foreign language teachers are doing many researches of how to improve students' ability to communicate successfully. Based on the theories of the relationship between language and thought of many linguist, psychologists, and educators, the thesis suggests that we should cultivate students the ability to think and speak as the native language speakers in foreign language teaching, i.e. to cultivate students the ability to think with foreign language thought. After reading many related books and articles and doing many teaching researches, the author considered that in fostering the ability to think in foreign language thought, we should be aware of the differences between L1 language and foreign language, different thinking patterns, cultures, and other factors. Besides, applying proper teaching strategies contrapuntally and fostering the ability of language awareness are also required.
