The researches to Hu Shi are numerous in China and other countries, which mainlyrelated to literature, philosophy, history, education, etc. He made an essential contributionto Chinese education. And with many years of teaching experience and study on Chineseand Western culture, he gradually formed his unique character of foreign language teachingthought. Hu Shi has extraordinary perceptions to foreign language teaching objectives andscientific methods and selection of subject matter. His thoughts on foreign languagecurriculum and teaching in China have prominent reference meaning.In view of researching and reorganizing of literatures and adopting comparativeanalysis, the paper is divided into five parts:Chapter1The formation of Hu Shi’s Chinese and Western culture thoughtThis chapter analyzes the formation of Hu Shi’s thought emphatically in terms oflearning experience. He received the traditional education for nine years at hometown inchildhood, which infected greatly by the unique culture of Huizhou; He received “neweducation” for six years when he is a teenager, and influenced by Liang Qichao’s and YanFu’s constitutional reform and modernization thought; then he spent seven years studyingabroad career in United States, where received the western education. Initially he formedthe“civilization reconstruct” concept, and also developed a "scientific method" ofconsciousness.Chapter2Hu Shi’s theory on the objectives of foreign language teachingAiming at the disadvantages of foreign language teaching at that moment, Hu Shi putforward the foreign language teaching objectives of “introducing scientific principle,reconstruct new civilization”and developing students’ inherent features, which actuallysolved the problem why we should learn foreign language.Chapter3Hu Shi’s theory on foreign language material of instructionHu Shi attached great importance to foreign language material of instruction, andexpounded the basic principles that should be followed during the process of foreign language material of instruction compilation, which actually solved the problem what weshould learn.Chapter4Hu Shi’s theory on scientific method of foreign language teachingHu Shi adopted Huxley’s agnosticism, Dewey’s experimentalism and Confucianism,Sinology spirit as the theory origin of foreign language teaching scientific methods whichexpounded the problem how to learn.Chapter5The enlightenment of Hu Shi’s foreign language thoughtAfter summarizing Hu Shi’s foreign language thought systematically, it is necessaryto linking theory with practice, reflect the implementation of the present foreign languageteaching, and provide beneficial thoughts for the reform of foreign language curriculumand teaching.
