This paper discusses about Tibetan women's situation and social status in the society. It studies mainly from how the women involved in the economic life, marriages, families and social characters. It compares with the women's social status nowadays. So the changes and development of Tibetan women's social status from history is clarified. Beside the preface and the conclusion, the discussion mainly has four parts as follows:The first part indicates that the women has some independence before marriages in terms of choosing a husband, property right, property heritage and the right to getting divorced. However, after getting married, the men almost become the master of his wife. In conclusion, the women have more rights before marriages in the family and less after marriages.The second part general discusses women's social status in terms of politics, social communications, married life and involvements with sport. The result is that women don't have much right and involvement in the area above.The third part emphasizes the importance of women's social status in terms of strong social responsibility and the shallow sense of virginity. However, women still mainly rely on man in daily life.The fourth part compares to the women's social status in the nowadays reflecting the changes and development as time passes.It concludes that, in the meantime, men are more powerful and has more rights in social life as well as within a family after a general view of the marriages, family and society. In Gesar epic, there are lots of wars between tribes so that women are easily oppressed by men. However, women still have a strong a sense of responsibility for their families and tribes. Generally, women's social status is much lower and they have to obey to men. On the other hand, there are still some women who are powerful, respected and independent in that society.
