By analyzing what functions an effective English learning system are supposed to have, the thesis puts forward both theoretical and practical detailed suggestions for designing and developing an effective English learning system. The thesis combines theories and interviews, analyzes the necessary modules for an effective English learning system and its theoretic framework which is based on theoretic analysis. Many interviews with teachers and students from different universities are included in this thesis. The thesis analyzes the modules approved or suggested by teachers and students in a practical way.Under the background of foreign language teaching education reform in China, stimulated by the development of foreign language teaching theories and technologies, English teaching based on multi-media and the internet emerged because of demand, and has been making great progress. However, the main four English learning systems in China, New Perspective English Learning System, New Era Interactive English Learning System, New Horizon College English Learning System and Experiencing College English Learning System, are not doing well enough in modules for effective functions. What functions are required in an effective learning system? The problem is critical under such English teaching reform background.This thesis will help change the situation and demonstrate that technicians are needed to develop English Learning Systems with English Teaching Theories, teachers and students' demands. Thus, English Learning Systems will run with effective functions to help educators.There are five chapters in this thesis. Chapter one is the introduction about research background and purpose. Chapter two is literature review, which gives the theoretical guide for research and makes known previous research in this field. In this chapter, it discusses review about informationized teaching mode and English learning software/systems first. Then it goes to the review of main English learning systems both home and abroad. Finally, problems that have emerged in integration of English teaching and technologies are discussed. Chapter three is the research and analysis of the interviews with teachers and students. Chapter four reviews some theories related to establish English learning systems, such as Constructivism and System Science. Then detailed suggestions are put forward with an example of required modules within an effective English learning system. Chapter five is the conclusion, making a summary and suggestion for further study.
