A Study On Tan Sitong's Poetry And Prose

Tan-Sitong was one of the distinguished thinkers, litterateurs and reformers in modern China. He advocated and took part in modern literature innovatory movement. He had also gained outstanding achievements in the literary creation. Then he was a man who had charisma and charm in historical figure. Today, there is very important thing to our modern literature research that we study his poesy and prose from the literary perspective. The paper is an attempt to research the literary creation of Tan- Sitong roundly and system analysis through occupying a comprehensive information and reference to the results of previous researches.The introduction part outlined the basis, value and significance, and looked back the history and status quo of the studies on Tan-Sitong. Chapter one gave a brief account of Tan-Sitong's life experience and circle of friends, analyzed his ideology and personality in combination with his works in order to understand his creation psychology and gave an overview of Tan-Sitong bookmaking's edition. Chapter two expounded Tan-Sitong's literary theory by the following three aspects. Prose's form and function, opinions on unity of the word and works, advocating the newspaper prose.Chapter three analyzed the ideological content of his poesy from the following six categories: landscape trip and frontier picture, lofty aspirations of saving society and ideal of serving country, being concerned about the people's hardships and criticizing the current affairs. Singing temperament and expressing embrace and presenting each other poems with his friends, singing of historical events and ode to things or inscribing paintings, new trend of thought and exotic cultures. Chapter four summarized his artistic achievements on poesy in two aspects: impassioned and vigorous poetry style, being the obvious characteristics of person of ideals and integrity, expressing word gorgeously, imagining peculiarly. He inherited and developed the romantic tradition since Gong-Zizhen. Chapter five discussed Tan Sitong prose creation and master, style changes and artistic achievements from the point of view of style. Note style was concise but discussion was rigorous, biography style was compact and was full of sensation. letter style was thorough reasoning and was good at unifying feelings and words, the newspaper style thinking bold, eloquent especially. In general, showing such characteristics of majestic vigor, parallel prose and prose combination, magnificent word.The epilogue briefly narrated Tan-Sitong's experience and creation in Gansu province from the point of regional literature. The ending part evaluated briefly his contribution and status in the literary history from literary creation and theoretical opinion.
