The society which Dr James Yen lived in was a transitive society. In order to find a way to solute two questions: national salvation and rejuvenation, all forces of the society put forward their solutions. As a intellectual, Dr James Yen hoped it could transform people's notion and cultivate people's potential by means of the Mass Education, which was based on combining traditional culture and dominical sanctify . He followed an ancient speech:"the people are the foundation of the country, foundation is sold, so is the nation"to carry out his plans. These plans could make people revitalize and the state strong and powerful by means of finishing social reconstruction from county to country and eliminating illiteracy to cultivate new citizens. From social critique, social integration and socialization and history angles, this thesis is based on sociological theory and method, using history methods:identifying and comparing history materials to search for Dr James Yen's notion about society crises at that time and his solutions about it.During Dr James Yen served in France, he saw the Overseas Chinese laborers'hardness. He realized the reason that lead to poverty and backwardness of China was having too much selfish persons in our country, so he advocated changing our notion and using our new notion to reform the old condition to set up a new social critique theory system based on the"new". Under his new theory system, facing on the four maladies in China—ignorance, poverty, weakness and selfishness, Dr James Yen felt bitter. He criticized the old educational system which only led to ignorance. He discontented with these failed mass education, impractical"new education"and"a few scholars'words movement"—New Culture Movement. He exposed the old basic county government which could only collect taxes and settle a lawsuit. Based on criticizing these factors which didn't make the people unite, the nationality get old, and the nationality degenerate, so he put forward his measures which were social integration thought and socialization thought to reorganize the society. First, he insisted on establishing a modern democratic republic where people had equal personality and all enjoyed the same political rights, it was his social ideal. At the same time, in order to strengthen national cohesion and national solidarity, one his opinion was to establish cultural integration measures which had Liberty, Equality, Fraternity and the People-oriented Thought, the other was to establish organization integration measures, which were from local county and town governments to the rural revived committee. Secondly, Dr James Yen believed all the problems were made by people, thus, problem-solving approaches should also be people. In view of Chinese people's ignorance and weakness, he established socialized targets from"eliminating illiteracy to cultivate new citizens"to the national reshaped and"the conscious, the self-reliance, the self-motion, the self-determination and the self-dependence. New prospects which were socialized environment have been opened up from"eliminating illiteracy movement","rural construction"to"province and county reformation". He set up socialized organization including Constitution of the Chinese National Association of the Mass Education Movement, Hebei County Community to the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction. He explored Socialized ways from school type to family type and society type and combined modern citizen view, national view with people-based thought, and it constituted systematic"cultivating new citizens"plan. This thesis analyzed Dr James Yen's social critique thought, social integration thought, socialization thought, reappeared ideological mode about transforming society and reshaping individual , which were based on social changes.
