This thesis is about cultural connotation and comparison of three kinds of plants-pine, bamboo and plum and their translation. To those whose interest is in translation, especially in literature translation, it is important and necessary to study the cultural values each language conveys. In the course of translation, lexicon plays a very active and vital role; special attention must be paid to the analysis and comparison of the cultural connotations of words. They can be found in the following areas of lexicon: non-equivalence, conceptual grouping, cultural background, and association-derivation.Translation involves language as well as culture. A successful translation needs a good mastery of language and culture. Therefore, it is important and necessary for translators to carefully study the relationship between language and culture.Based on the above-mentioned concepts, the research is to deal with the three kinds of plants-pine, bamboo and plum. Also the process in which the distinguished cultural flavors of the three plants have come into being in Chinese culture will be analyzed. Proverbs, idioms, poems, classical poems as well as other literary genres, in which the kinds of plants are found to be employed as symbols, will be taken as specific evidence for analysis.Through careful and close study of the relationship between language and culture, of the cultural connotation and comparison of three kinds of plants-pine, bamboo and plum, the research seeks to obtain an in-depth comprehension of the commonness of different cultures and individuality of each culture so as to avoid misusing their implications and lessen the impact of cultural shock. Finally, a discussion will be made on the employment of different translation methods to deal with cultural implications carried by the three kinds of plants. Greater importance will be attached to cultural equivalence than to any other aspects.
