A Investigation Of The Literature Works Published By Shijie Press (1917-1949)

As one of the three biggest publishing houses in Republic of China, Shijie Press plays an important role in the preduction and spread of the Chinese modern culture and literature. It is also one of the most active publishing houses in the publications of Chinese modern literature works. From 1917 to 1949, Shijie press has published 515 literature works, including 71 theory works and 444 creative works. The amount of these works makes Shijie Press play a leading role in Chinese modern publishing institutions. In addition, Shijie press has published 7 literature magazines, such as The Merry Magazine, LiangChen, Red Magazine, The Detective World, Red Rose, Poems and Essays, and Drama Monthly. Some of them were very influential in 1920's Chinese readers, such as Red Magazine, The Detective World and Red Rose. They have the essential contribution for the development of Chinese modern popular literature. Especially, the Red Rose, which is established in 1924 and published for 7 years, including 288 volumes, is one of the most longevous magazines in the publishing history of Chinese modern literature. It is also a representative magazine for Chinese popular literary journals published before the anti-war. Shijie press is the publishing center of Chinese modern popular literature, and popularity is the essential characteristic of most of its publications. In a word, with the outstanding performance in literatue publishing, Shijie press provided a perfect publishing platform for the preduction and spread of Chinese modern literature, especially for that of Chinese modern popular literature.By the use of the statistical data analysis method, this thesis makes a general investigation of the literature works published by Shijie Press, and then, based on the statistical data, makes a description and analysis of the literary publishing situation of Shijie Press. By the way, the author tries to clarify some misunderstanding and prejudice to Shijie Press. This thesis has three chapters. Chapter one mainly discribes the establishment and developing history of Shijie Press, Chatpter two deals with the issues of the literary journals published by Shijie Press, and Chapter three mainly conducts a detailed statistics and analysis of its publication of literary books, including theory books, creative books, translated books, and series. Finally, in the peroration, the anthor summarizes the essential characteristics of the literature publication of Shijie Press, and then gives the reasons.
