English, an international language, is one of the essential tools contributing greatly to the advancement of science and technology, economic development and cultural exchanges across the world, and has become an important element for personal development. ESP (English for Specific Purposes) came into being in the 1960s as a result of the unprecedented growth in economy after the Second World War. In recent years, ESP, as a practical method, is drawing more and more attention. Nonetheless, ESP in China's secondary vocational schools has not developed smoothly, largely because of less importance attached to it from the general public and the educational authorities. Facing the difficulties in English teaching in a secondary vocational school, the author attempts to explore the ESP teaching approach. The thesis focuses on the following parts. Firstly, based on a survey of financial oral English teaching and learning in Nanhu Vocational School, the author is intended to examine the research on ESP language teaching and learning in English teaching in China. Secondly, through the analysis of the features of ESP language teaching, the author crystallizes the practicability and the importance of ESP language teaching in financial oral English. Then, the author conducts an experiment in two classes, analyses the experimental results and discusses how to carry out ESP language teaching. Lastly, some suggestions about ESP language teaching in financial oral English are put forward with the hope to make contributions to the teaching and learning of financial English.
