Self-concept is the core component of human personality structure and the view on oneself.It is greatly affected by culture in the process of development.This research aims to explore the characteristics of junior students' self-concept development with different economic and cultural backgrounds in urban and rural areas so as to provide improvemental suggestions and theoretical guidance for the present urban and rural education in our country.This research is divided into two parts.In the first part,the Self-concept Description Questionnaireâ…¡(SDQâ…¡) is used to assess 522 junior students come from urban or rural areas,carrying out the contrastive research on their self-concept characteristics and performance.The second part is accomplished by using the twenty-sentence scale,i.e."WAI" skill questionnaire,to discover the differences of self-concept structure by studying 120 junior students self-description.The results of this research show that:â… .Differences in the characteristics of self-concept performance between urban and rural junior students:(1) There exist significant differences in the characteristics of self-concept development between urban and rural junior students.The general development features of urban junior students' self-concept shows an upside-down U-shape developing trend,while the rural displays a steady increasing trend in self-concept development,which is quite different from the precious findings.(2) Urban junior students perform better than rural ones in the total score of self-concept. Urban students score higher than rural ones in all the other subscales except in the subscale of honesty,speech and parents-relation,which indicate that the development of urban junior students' self-concept is better than that of the rural ones' on the whole.(3) Both urban and rural junior students' self-concept has respectively significant differences in terms of gender factor.(4) There exists significant gender difference among rural junior students but no significant among urban ones.â…¡.Differences in self-concept structure between urban and rural junior students: (1) There exist huge differences between urban and rural junior students' self-concept. Especially in the aspects of self- cognition,self-control,actual self,ideal self and reflected self,the differences are rather significant.(2) There exist significant differences in mental self and social self between male and female junior students in urban area,And the mental self of the male junior students is higher than that of the female ones but their social self is lower than the female ones',which indicates urban male junior students pay more attention to their individual abilities while the female ones incline to recognize themselves from the angle of social connections.(3) There exist significant differences in self-experience between male and female ones in rural area,which indicates that the educational mode rural girls receive differs from that the rural boys receive,and rural girls also lack interpersonal communication and social experience.(4) Urban junior students pay more attention to their own development and had more learning challenges,while rural junior students lay more emphasis on acquiring material wealth,improving interpersonal relationship and aspiring to change their own situations.Most rural junior students hope to have more communications concerning interpersonal relationship.(5) Urban junior students scored higher than rural ones in self-cognition but lower in self-control.
