With the trend of globalization, more and more Chinese enterprises have expanded their business from domestic market to world market. Enterprise name, which resembles the image of an enterprise, is the number one advertisement of the enterprise. That a Chinese enterprise needs an English name turns out to be a fact because English is the international language nowadays. Studies concerning the C-E translation of enterprise name are many. However, they fail to point out that the translation of the enterprise code is the core of the translation of an enterprise name.Since Gutt introduced Relevance theory put forward by Sperber&Wilson into the field of translation, Relevance theory has caused great influence in the field of translation. Many scholars begin conducting studies on the application of RT to translation, but a research concerning the translation of enterprise code under the framework of RT has been left untouched, especially a Relevance-theoretic account of the phenomenon of domestication and foreignization in C-E Translating of enterprise code. The author believes that the translation of enterprise code is inter-cultural translation, so it shouldn't simply be guided by general translation techniques but should be conducted from the perspective of culture. Domestication and foreignization shouldn't be equated with literal translation and free translation for the former mainly concerns with literary strategy and cultural ideology while the latter is basically translation techniques at language level. We try to explain the phenomenon of domestication and foreignization in C-E translating of enterprise code under the framework of RT with the hope of offering theoretic support for the phenomenon and at the same time shedding some light on the C-E translation of enterprise code. The outline of the thesis is shown as follows:In section one of chapter one, the structure of enterprise name is analyzed and the concept that the translation of enterprise code is the core of the translation of an enterprise name is put forward. And the importance of enterprise code is illustrated. In the second section, the sample used and research methodology are introduced while the objective and significance of the study are stated in the third section.Chapter two is literature review, in which the previous studies on the translation of enterprise name and Relevance theory are introduced.Chapter three offers the theoretic support for the thesis. In this chapter the reason why we adopt domestication and foreignization is explained in details and concept that the translation of enterprise code is a special kind of cultural translation is put forward. Also the history of RT is introduced briefly as well the main concepts of RT. The essence of translation under the framework of RT is illustrated in this chapter.Chapter four is the main part of the thesis. In this chapter we summary four translation techniques frequently employed in the translation of enterprise name: transliteration, literal translation, free translation and zero translation. We divide these techniques into eight elements, which are not exhaustive, and further reclassify them into three categories: domestication, foreignization and the combination of domestication and foreignization. We take advantage of the Chinese and English versions of the Top 500 Chinese enterprise names, and make an analysis of the phenomenon of domestication and foreignization in the C-E translating of enterprise code.Chapter five serves as a conclusion of the thesis.
