It is quite common to apply foreignization and domestication in translation practice, which has attracted much attention in the translation field. In recent years, the academic journals have published lots of papers about domestication and foreignization at home and abroad, which has developed the study of domestication and foreignization with different perspectives. However, there are still many misconceptions and deviations in studies, for example, many translators equated the domestication and foreignization with literal translation and free translation. To some extent, these misunderstandings have impeded the development of domestication and foreignization, so the author carries on a thorough elaboration in the following aspects: the difference between literal translation and domestication strategy, the difference between free translation and foreignization strategy, the definition of domestication and foreignization and their opposite and unity relations.Both at home and abroad, various schools have raced to explain the context theory from different perspectives, but its development is still not perfect. And there are various opinions about the category of context and its relevant research. However, the previous study and researches only lied in the aspect of context theory rather than combing up the context theory and translation practice.Based on the research of the predecessors, the translator chooses a literary fiction in the New Yorker magazine and analyzes the application of foreignization strategy and domestication strategy under the guidance of context theory in literary translation. In the first part, the author describes the task background and the reasons for choosing this text, and introduces the natures and features of this text in detail. In the second part, the author has explained the following concepts: the context theory, the classification and eight functions of context, the domestication and foreignization, the relationship between the foreignization and domestication strategy and the context theory. The third part is the core of this paper, the author analyzes the application of domestication and foreignization in the literary translation—Yesterday under the guidance of Context theory. The domestication includes the liberal translation and the substitution. The foreignization includes the literal translation and the transliteration. In the fourth part, the author summarizes the translation problems meeting in the process of translation. In the fifth part, the author carries on an overall overview for this paper which mainly includes the following aspects: the relationship between domestication strategy and foreignization strategy; the differences between literary translation and non-literary translation as well as how to choose the domestication strategy and foreignization strategy in translation practice.
