Vocabulary study can be at different stages. There is a certain difference in aspect of content, method and aim when one is at different stages of learning vocabulary. The words we will learn at the elementary stage of vocabulary study are usually at such high usage and large extent that we should master them skillfully. The main target of writing this thesis is to study and test how those learners who are at their elementary stage of Chinese learning learn and grasp some new Chinese words. The whole thesis further focuses on testifying the extent and depth of Chinese words that have been mastered by those elementary Chinese learners, by combining the glossaries in their Chinese text books with some testing methods. The thesis is mainly divided into three parts. The first part of thesis is mainly to discuss the effect of learning and grasping new Chinese words on conformation of language ability, to analyse both the evaluation of vocabulary learning and the method of testing it, and also to put forward the most important question to study in the thesis. In the second part of the thesis, the writer uses glossaries in text books of "writing", "listening comprehension", and "oral Chinese" that elementary Chinese learners have learnt to count and establish vocabulary database, including how many words there are in three text books, how many commonly appearing words there are in three books, as well as how much time and how often each word appears in three books. In the third part of the thesis, the writer picks up 18 Chinese words from the text book and designs a testing paper with them to testify the learning effect of all those 49 elementary Chinese learners. In this part, the writer divides those 49 learners into three groups, which are Japanese students, Korean students, and non-Japanese Korean students. There are also two parts in designing the whole testing paper, which are Part 1 and Part 2. In Part 1, those testees are required to write their self-evaluation of learning vocabulary. In Part 2, they are asked to make sentences according to their own understanding of those 18 words. The outcome of the test shows that the ability of learners who come from Japan and Korea is far better than those from other countries. In the comparison of Japanese learners and Korean learners, there still exists some difference in spite of their Chinese language culture background. The study of the whole thesis is helpful to improve text books learned by those elementary Chinese learners, also it is useful to know about the learning effect of those learners.
