Modal particles are the main way to express tone meaning, which play a crucial role in daily communication. Modal particles can not only help people express meanings accurately, but also help to build a good understanding between listeners and speakers. Therefore, modal particles are important empty words in the Chinese empty word system.The previous studies of Chinese modal particles focus on the tone meanings and the pragmatic functions. As the studies go deeper and further, there comes more country-specific modal particle acquisition studies. Although, the country-specific modal particle acquisition studies are becoming more abundant, the modal particle study is still a weak link of modal particle research. Therefore, enhance the studies of modal particle acquisition is requisite. Besides, most country-specific studies focus on learners from China’s neighbor countries like Korea, Thailand, japan and Mongolia, while just a few studies aim at learners from English-speaking countries. Therefore, this paper chooses four modal particles “啊、吧、吗、呢” as the point of penetration, and discuss the modal particle acquisition of learners from English-countries. Furthermore, this paper also brings out some teaching strategies for modal particles. On the basis of presenting strategies of teaching, this paper makes some suggestions of editing of textbooks.This paper’s data is withdrawn from the test of fifteen primary level Chinese learners and fifteen intermediate and high level Chinese learners. Based on the data, this paper reconstructs the acquisition order of modal particles’‘啊、 吧、吗、呢”,analyses the causes of errors. Finally, this paper put forward some strategies for teaching,(1) When provide teaching, comply with the acquisition order of modal particles.(2) Pay attention to the context that the modal particles appear in teaching.(3) Employ flexible teaching methods in accordance with the different expression of English particles and Chinese modal particles.
