| Thanks to the advancement of world economy, intercommunication among all nations in respects of politics, economy and culture is becoming more and more intensified. Translation, an important tool for intercultural communication, is playing a more significant role in the international stage. Nowadays, many scholars have realized that translation under such a new era should not be confined only to a linguistic level, and cultural factors must be taken into serious consideration. Therefore, Susan Bassnett and Andre Lefevere put forward the theory of culture turn, which infuses a brand new insight into translation studies and at the same time promotes the development of translation.This thesis tries to illustrate the importance of cultural ingredients in translating Chinese into English. The author chooses the Chinese character"心"from Dragon-Carving and the Literary Mind (文心雕龙) to prove the viewpoint since"心"is rich in its connotations related to traditional Chinese culture. Its underlined meaning varies according to different contexts, which shows the significance of good comprehension on both original work and more importantly, on its cultural background.This thesis is consisted of 5 parts, the first of which is an introduction on the importance of culture and the development of Chinese character; the second part centers on the development of translation at home and abroad and also introduces the background knowledge as well as the causes for the emergence of culture turn. The next part describes the significance of"The Dragon Carving and the Literary Mind"(文心雕龙) in Chinese literature history and the important status of the conception of"心"in China since ancient times. Chapter 4, by quantitative approach, lists many examples of"心"and describes the underlined meaning and proper translation of it under different contexts. The last part, being the conclusion, presents majors findings, shortcomings of the thesis, as well as suggestions for further study.
